Template in SharePoint 2013 Content Type
In several organizations, use of standard templates for business documents is quite common.
- We can associate content types with these templates in order to improve the overall functionality & information flow within SharePoint 2013. This would also make document libraries more useful to you.
- By associating document templates with a specific content type, it becomes easier to control the quality of data that is to be collected.
You can choose from a variety of file formats as the base of the template like
- Word documents
- Excel spreadsheets
- InfoPath forms
- Custom web pages
You can go for uploading a custom template to content type. Else, you can also point to a specific template that has been stored at another location.
In case you want to especially point to one of the existing templates, ensure that all of the members who are using that content type can easily access the template location.
In Microsoft Word, a specific document template is relevant only for initial creation of document.
Nonetheless, for other content types based purely on InfoPath or different publishing templates like page layouts, any change in the template related with the content type simply updates your existing documents.
