How to Create a Custom Content Type in SharePoint 2013

In this tutorial, we will learn the steps to creating a content type in SharePoint 2013.

Step 1:

Go to Site Settings. Navigate to Site Content Types. Next, click the Create link

Step 2:

Our content type would be for document libraries pertaining to Courses.

Step 3:

Just like we did in case of site columns; we shall put this into a group in order to easily identify it. The group name shall be “SharePoint Basics”. Now, click OK.

Step 4:

You will get to see few fields already existing for the Document Content Type, Title and File Name. Now, we will add Course field.

Step 5:

Select Course column and click Add. Finally click OK

Step 6:

Click “Site Contents”, then go to “add an app” for creating a document library.

Step 7:

Click Create. Once created, open the test library and then set course document type to content type. Navigate to Library shown on the Ribbon. Now, go to Library Settings

Step 8:

Go to Advanced Settings.

Step 9:

Set Yes in the option “Allow Management of Content Types”. Click OK.

Step 10:

Filter the library in “SharePoint Basics”. Now, select Course Documents Type and click Add. Finally click OK

Step 11:

Go to Test library. Click New Document.

Step 13:

Finally, click “Delete This Content Type”.
