Concept Of REST APIs In SharePoint

In this tutorial, we will learn about REST APIs in SharePoint. REST API is not a traditional API, that include a set of libraries containing types and the types containing properties & methods.

The REST API is typically implemented as a Data-centric web service based upon the Open Data Protocol. In this way, these web services work and deploy each resource in system.

Let’s look at this in the browser Internet Explorer in which a SharePoint site is already open.

Step 1:

Go to Internet Explorer settings. Navigate to Content tab and select the settings available for Feeds & Web Slices.

A dialog box will open up on the screen. You need to make sure that feed reading view is fully off. Click OK.

 Step 2:

Change the current URL to site URL +/_api/web. Next press Enter

You will get an XML document. If you scroll down further, you will get further information about the current web.

Next, in case you want to know more about the lists that are in the web, you need to append all such lists to your URL. In this way, instead of getting information about a single individual object, you will get a full collection of detailed information about lists that are in the current site. When you were using the Explorer browser, you were issuing suitable get requests to your server. However, you can also do the remaining standard CRUD operations.
