SQL Server 2014: Recent Edition from Microsoft
With SQL Server 2014, Microsoft ensures better user experience for all. With several advancements in its features in the advanced version, it has eliminated several OLTP performance problems. Users no more encounter problems like slow disk performance with in-memory tables, slow log performance with delayed durability, or maintenance concurrency with lock priority. Below are some of the features that make SQL Server 2014 really remarkable in performance.
With a feature like In-Memory OLTP users are able to store sensitive data in in-memory database. With greater memory space available on the hard disk, the performance degree has enhanced to a great level. Also, the performance speed can be improved further by modifying already stored procedures into in-memory procedures.
Managed Backup to Azure
Microsoft SQL Server 2014 hosts another significant feature called Managed Backup. All your database is backed up automatically. The back-up takes place on the basis of recovery interval and workload patterns. As soon as the system receives altered data in the database, it creates its back-up to azure.
SQL Server Data Files in Azure
Users can access all the data locally. However, the central location of the data files is in an Azure blob container. This proves out to be useful in DR as well as migration.
The data warehouse performance has improved drastically in SQL Server 2014 as it features Columnstore indexes. The columnstore indexes in this edition by Microsoft can be updated. Also, now users can view columnstore indexes for some OLTP applications.
Resource Governor for I/O
With better access to runaway I/O in SQL Server 2014, queries can be now placed into a specific resource pool. Also, the amount of I/O allowed per volume can be limited. With MIN IOPS, you can set the minimum level of performance, while maximum level of performance can be set with MAX IOPS. MIN IOPS allows a minimum number of I/O transactions in a second, while MAX IOPS sets a maximum number of transactions allowed in a second.
Delayed durability is a term for the process that renders the control back to the application even before changes are made in the log. It is a significant improvement in SQL server as it enhances the speed of the transactions involved.
SSD Buffer Pool Extension
With the option of buffer pool extension, a Solid State Drive (SSD) can be define by the user as a buffer file location. This speeds up the paging process as SSD is comparably too quick in action than a spinning disk.
