Version History of the World’s Popular E-commerce Platform Magento
Magento has gained huge popularity as an open-source CMS for e-commerce websites. Originally developed by the US private company Varien Inc., the software comes with a bundle of features that render e-commerce store management easy for online merchants.
Different Platforms for Magento
Some of the most prominent features of Magento e-commerce platform include store Management, Mobile Commerce, Promotion programs & marketing tools, International support, Search engine optimization, Order, Delivery, Payment tools, Customer services, Customer account, Categories Management, Browsing Categories, Browsing Product, Analysis and Reporting, Customer Reviews, Cross-Selling, Product comparison, Feedback for product improvement and many more.
Magento makes use of following in its core structure –
- MySQL relational database management system
- PHP programming language
- Zend Framework elements
It basically applies the object-oriented programming conventions with a totally new model controller. Magento also makes use of entity–attribute–value model for storing data.
Three distinct platforms of Magento include –
- Magento Community Edition
- Magento Enterprise Edition
- Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition
Apart from these, Magento Go and Magento Professional Edition are two former platforms. Let’s take a deeper look into these.
Magento Community Edition
It is a totally open-source ecommerce platform. Based on their requirement, developers can implement all core files in order to extend its functionality. Developers can even add new plug-in modules that have been provided by various other developers.
Ever since the release of the first public beta version in the year 2007, Magento Community Edition has constantly been developed & customized so as to provide the most basic ecommerce platform to global users.
The Magento Commerce, Inc. website has the links to download current Magento release as well as all previous release versions of 1.X and 2.X version branches of Magento Community Edition. The most recent actively supported Magento Community Edition versions are CE 220.127.116.11 and 2.0.4 that have been released on March 31, 2016.
Magento Enterprise Edition
It is basically derived from Magento Community Edition. Magento Enterprise Edition has thus the same core files like Magento Community Edition. However, unlike Community Edition, it is not available to users for free. But it has much more features and functionality compared to Magento Community.
Magento Enterprise is designed specifically for large size businesses that need technical support involving installation, configuration, usage, and troubleshooting. It comes with an annual maintenance fees.
It must be mentioned here that neither Magento Community nor Enterprise comes with the option of hosting. Basically, the Magento team has to develop the Enterprise Edition by effectively cooperating with multiple users and third parties.
Magento Enterprise Edition’s latest actively supported versions include EE 18.104.22.168 and EE 2.0.4 that were released on March 31, 2016.
Magento Go essentially was an ecommerce solution that came with the option of simplified web hosting by Magento Inc. Launched in February 2011; Magento Go was designed to support global small e-commerce businesses. The web hosting facility provided an option to avoid software installation.
Magento Go had built-in modules yet it was a platform least customizable. There was the option there though to have more Magento extensions enabled for better functionality. Magento Inc. later announced on July 1, 2014, that they would shut down Magento Go platform soon. Finally, on February 1, 2015, Magento Go was completely made unavailable for small businesses.
Magento 2 is the newest release of this robust ecommerce platform. Magento 2 comes with several new & highly improved features. Most importantly, its architecture is very much different from the previous versions of Magento.
It was announced in the year 2010. Planned for grand release in the year 2011, its merchant beta version got released in 2015. It’s since that time that Magento 1 and Magento 2 both exist simultaneously. However, the latter only has new updates.
Unveiling the Rich Magento History
Varien developed Magento as it recognized the various limitations of e-commerce platform OSCommerce. Otherwise a popular e-commerce platform otherwise, OSCommerce lacks stability, unique features, and the much-needed flexibility. This provoked Varien to develop an e-commerce platform much superior to the existing OSCommerce.
Magento started first with release of its first beta community version in 2007. In the beginning, it was planned that the version would be called Bento. However, as it was trademarked by another company, they considered it better to unify it with Mage and thus launched Magento, which is the e-commerce platform’s famous name used till today.
As a popular e-commerce platform, Magento has a rich version history. Below is the Magento version history shown in form of an image –
After the successful achievements attained from the first beta versions, Magento 1.0 was launched in March 2008 under Open Software License 3.0.
In the year 2011, it came as an announcement that eBay had made investment in Magento and so accordingly owned 49 percent of its ownership share. In the same year later, eBay acquired Magento, with its plans to merge the platform with new things.
